Functional Medicine:  What is it and How can it help me?

Have you ever had a doctor tell you they don't know what's wrong with you? Or had a doctor think a symptom you struggle with is more than likely XYZ and put you (or try and put you) on a medication that might help or might make you worse or even worse, give you another problem?

Yeah, me too. Enter Functional Health. The better way to understanding your health, your symptoms, and your conditions. Understanding Why you struggle and how to feel better and possible get better.

Functional Medicine is an individualized, patient-centered, science-based approach that empowers patients and practitioners to work together as a team to address the underlying causes of disease and promote optimal wellness. It requires a detailed understanding of each patient’s genetic, biochemical, and lifestyle factors allowing for personalized treatment plans that lead to symptom relief and many times recovery.

By addressing root cause, rather than symptoms, practitioners become oriented to identifying the complexity of disease. They may find one condition has many different causes or one cause may result in many different conditions.

Maintaining health is hard enough as it is, but to struggle with daily symptoms or any type of "condition" it becomes downright exhausting and confusing. Searching the internet can lead you down the quick fix rabbit hole which often will cause more harm then good, while wasting your time and your money. Unfortunately general practitioners are not allowed the time needed for adequate patient care, let alone digging deep for other causes. Some doctors can also lack the education that helps the patient get out of the box many schools put conditions in.

There are two reasons we go to the doctor.
  • We are either sick
  • or We are trying not to get sick
prevention is always better than a cure.
staying above the wellness line decreases the effects of triggering events, thus less symptoms.

FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE and HEALTH is about seeing the whole picture, looking at you as a person, not a protocol. Listening to you, recreating your individual story that contains your genetics, a lifetime of history (from before delivery to present time.)

As a functional practitioner I spend a lot of time collecting all the information.
We look at what has worked for you in the past and what hasn't.
We discuss what you are eating and timing of eating.
We look at supplements, your environment, your stress and mindset, your relationships, sleep habits, exercise, and I even want to know about your poop. When we gather (normally via zoom) we discuss you, all of you. No stone unturned I listen to you and the story you have to tell, after all you know yourself better than anyone else.

From there I create a time line and functional matrix that will serve you and your entire health care team. We will discuss your action plan. We discuss healing diets that work for your body and your life style, we discuss sleep, habits, lifestyle, stress, and next steps. Steps you can choose do on your own or steps I can guide you through as little or as much as you need me to.

After our first 3-4 weeks together, you will have a clear idea of your roots and many branches are. You will understand why you struggle, when your struggles started, and how to begin to heal. You will be able to optimize your time with your doctor and if needed, know what to request and why. And most importantly you will have a health care team that works for you. A team that can help you heal and no longer struggle. A team who help you live, so your body can function at its optimal health.

I have recently created a safe space online where I pour encouragement and life into those who struggle with chronic illness. Helping them to move from a frustrated patient (or mom) to empowered with a plan. Reclaiming health from a diagnosed or undiagnosed illness through a functional whole body approach.

If that sounds good to you please feel free to join us, we would would to have you! Join
